An Advocate can be
vital in getting your student a “fair and
appropriate education” (IDEA). An advocate
can be directly involved as your
representative, doing most of the work or
providing you with advice necessary to
advocate for yourself and your child.
Here are some
responsibilities an advocate can help with:
-
Reviewing assessments, previous IEP’s and
students records
-
Attending IEP meetings or 504 plans
-
Preparing for the IEP eligibility
meeting or annual review
-
Prepping for the IEP
or 504 plan
-
Requesting an
assessment or IEP meeting
-
Reviewing the
strength of your case
-
Researching any
legal issues pertinent to your case
-
Support and
confidence during the proceeding
-
Attending mediation
(if necessary)
-
Classroom observations
